The Public Service Emerging Leaders Fellowship (PSELF) Programme has been hailed as a progressive initiative whose impact will transcend generations and guarantee inter-generational continuity. These sentiments were shared last Friday when the new Public Service Commission Chairperson Ambassador Antony Mwaniki Muchiri hosted the programme partners at the Commission House in Nairobi.
The high-level meeting attended by representatives from the Public Service Commission, Emerging Leaders Foundation, and the Emerging Public Leaders was convened to formally introduce ELF and EPL teams to the new commission chair, and to walk the commission chair through the Public Service Emerging Leaders Fellowship Programme-the concept, the milestones, and the next steps.
In the meeting, the commission chair was also brought up to speed with the details of the recruitment process-call for applications, validating the applications, shortlist, interviews, selection, and induction-which has entered its second stage this week. This was followed by a brief of what the upcoming Programme launch on 15th March looks like.
Ambassador Muchiri appreciated the concept of the PSELF and lauded all efforts that have been invested in it so far. He further thanked the partners – ELF and EPL for their commendable gesture of partnering with the PSC to nurture a cadre of meritocratic values-based public leaders within the public service.
While expressing the commission’s confidence and unreserved support for the Programme, the Chair committed to hosting quarterly mentorship sessions with the inaugural cohort of fifty fellows.
He urged all parties to be deliberate in the outcomes and impact by inculcating in the fellows the cardinal tenets of integrity, citizen-centrism, and stellar service delivery as pillars of a respectable public service.
ELF-Africa Executive Director, Caren Wakoli thanked the chair for his reinvigorating commitment and counsel. She assured him that ELF-Africa’s devotion to accompanying young women and men to meaningful and dignified participation at all levels of leadership was unwavering. While celebrating the chair’s illustrious and exemplary career in public service, Caren added that ELF-Africa would spare no effort to ensure that there are many more young people to follow in Ambassador Muchiri’s steps.
On her part, Yawa Hansen-Quao, the Executive Director of Emerging Public Leaders conveyed EPL global board’s gratitude to the chair for the immense support and guidance the commission has offered to the Programme since conceptualisation in 2019.
She reiterated EPL’s resource commitment which she said was key in guaranteeing the success of the Kenya Programme that will leverage a lot on the great successes recorded in Liberia and Ghana.
Mr. Emmanuel Lubembe who chairs the PSELF Steering Committee was also present together with Rose Wachuka, a member of the committee. The PSELF programme attracted over five thousand applications from a cross section of the public service. The shortlisting process kicked-off this week, with interviews expected the be conducted from 15th to 17th February 2022.
