2022 General Elections Youth perspectives survey findings by ELF-Africa
According to IEBC data, 22.1 million Kenyans registered to vote in the 2022 General elections up from 19.6 million in the 2017 election. Shockingly though, the youth only made up 39.84% of the registered voters, which is a 5% decrease from the 2017 election. While the official and accurate voter turn-out is still contested, it is generally agreed that it was significantly low (about 65%) compared to 2017 General Elections, this means, that most likely fewer youth turned up to carry out their civic duties on election day.
The foregoing formed the basis of the ELF-Africa poll – seeking to examine the reasons behind voter absentia among the youth, while also exploring factors that influence voter choices among the youth who decide to engage in elections. The outcomes of this poll will inform civic engagement strategy among youth actors, with the view of inspiring active citizenship among the youth before the next polls in 2027
